Shelter services: Dedicated shelter for lost or abandoned domestic ferrets; permanent Foster care of ill/elderly animals. In 2024, 66 animals were accepted into the shelter. 24 were surrendered directly from southern New England owners unable/unwilling to provide care. 7 had been abandoned outdoors; 2 were transferred in from Animal Control. 37 were released from medical research facilities. 50 were adopted into carefully-screened new homes and 6 were placed into permanent Foster care. An average of 18.25 animals were cared for in 2024 under this unique program, which places animals unlikely to be adopted due to age or illness into a screened volunteer home, where they live for the rest of their lives and are financially supported by the organization. As of December 31, 2024, the Ferret Association has cared for 2,329 ferrets over the course of our 34-year history.

Laboratory Ferret Rescue: In 2024, 37 ferrets were accepted and rehomed from a medical research institution. 2 were transferred to a trusted shelter partner for rehoming. Our plan is to build upon our base of laboratory contacts (currently 4) to connect with more research facilities where ferrets can be either released to us or to a local, contracted shelter.
