The United Methodist Center in Far Rockaway (UM Center) is a vital anchor in Southeast Queens, dedicated to combating food insecurity in a federally designated food desert. Our programs bridge the gap for thousands of individuals and families who struggle to afford nutritious food, providing a stable foundation of support that promotes community health and dignity.Operating twice weekly (Tuesdays and Thursdays), our pantry operates via a client choice model to provide fresh produce, proteins and shelf stable items to individuals and families in need. This approach ensures neighbors receive groceries that will last a minimum of 3 days and meet their household and cultural preferences. In FY 2025, we distributed 6,011 pantry bags, providing essential groceries to 18,912 individuals. In addition to our pantry, our center also offered Monday to Friday, hot nutritious meals for those in immediate need through our lunch and dinner services. Our soup kitchen services provided 26,687 total meals (15,342 lunches and 11,345 dinners) to individuals throughout the year. Beyond food, we have periodic clothing distributions and toy drives to provide additional resources to the community. .
