La MaMa holds a unique and essential space in the global performing arts landscape, where marginalized and nontraditional artists can experiment and develop new work. The majority of the productions La MaMa presents are new works. La MaMa provides critical developmental support by presenting World, American and NYC Premieres as well as workshop productions, giving artists the space and time needed for these first showings. We also support the development of new work through residencies which see an artist from the inception of a project through workshops and productions. Our partnerships extend beyond the artists themselves to the communities that shape and support their work, leading to new collaborations. La MaMa owns and operates 88,000 square feet of dedicated art space across four buildings in the East Village, consisting of four flexible performance venues, three rehearsal studios, a visiting-artist dormitory, an art gallery, and an archive that documents the history of the Off Off Broadway movementLa MaMa supports approximately 1,500 artists annually and presents 60-70 full onsite productions in a typical season, most of which are either world, U.S. or NYC premieres. Artists in our season receive up to three weeks of free rehearsal space, a theatre with a light/sound package, marketing support, a production manager, front-of-house staff, box office services, and 50-60 percent of box office revenue.
