To be a birthplace for new, literate, intimate musicals, and a place where underappreciated musical gems from the past are rediscovered.In our 202324 Season, The York Theatre celebrated a dynamic mix of new musicals and rediscovered treasures.We launched the season with the world premiere of The Jerusalem Syndrome, a hilarious and thought-provoking musical comedy about the psychological condition in which tourists in Jerusalem experience temporary delusionsoften believing they are biblical figures. With a book by Laurence Holzman and the late Felicia Needleman and music by Kyle Rosen, the show earned praise for its originality and humor. DC Theater Arts called it "Funny and uplifting! A musical comedy that will keep you entertained," while NYTheatre-Wire described it as "Delightful! An exhilarating and enlightening show." In true York tradition, the production showcased both established Broadway talent and exciting new voices making their Off-Broadway debuts.Next, we presented the New York premiere of A Sign of the Times at New World Stages, which ran for an impressive six months. Set against the backdrop of the 1960s, the show follows a young photographer striving to find her place in a divided, fast-changing world. Featuring hit songs of the era, dazzling choreography, and whirlwind romance, the production held up a mirror to today's society. From Emmett Till to George Floyd, the Women's Liberation Movement to #MeToo, and the Vietnam War to the war in Ukraine, audiences were struck by the uncanny parallels between the past and present. As Cindy's story unfolded, so too did a call for reflection, unity, and hope. TheaterMania raved, "SO MUCH FUN! Few will be able to resist, and the New York Beacon praised it as "BREATHTAKING and TOE-TAPPING throughout!" The show perfectly embodied The York's mission of honoring the past while presenting fresh, relevant work.To close out our season, we returned to our much-loved New2NY series with four brand-new musicals, each making its New York debut in a minimally staged, concert-style format: Now Comes the Fun Part (book by Lynne Halliday & James Hindman, music by Jeffrey Lodin, lyrics by Mark Waldrop) offered a hilarious and heartfelt look at the indignities and absurdities of agingeverything from colonoscopies to empty nesting and reentering the dating pool. A musical celebration of life's "third trimester," the show struck a relatable, comedic chord with audiences. Twist of Fate, with book and lyrics by Kleban Award winner Lissa Levin and music by Ron Abel, told the compelling true story of a Romani fortuneteller arrested in 1970s Los Angeles. In her fight for justice and the respect of her daughter, she becomes an unlikely First Amendment hero. Levin was inspired by a Los Angeles Times article and remarked: "Who knew the practice was banned? Who fights for the right to predict the future? And what great fodder to explore a misunderstood culture, the melting pot of Los Angeles, and the freedom of speech?" Monte Cristo, from Peter Kellogg (Desperate Measures) and Stephen Weiner (The Rivals), reimagined Dumas's classic tale of betrayal and revenge as a thrilling, contemporary musical. A sweeping story of injustice and redemption, the production was hailed by Times Square Chronicles as "Another triumph for The Yorka literary landmark turned into a musical masterpiece." Finally, InunDATEd, with book by Alice Scovell and music and lyrics by Christine Lavin, brought a refreshingly modern and hilarious voice to the series. It follows Lucy, a singer-songwriter navigating the ups and downs of online dating in New York City. On a quest to find "the one," she wades through a million mismatchesbut at least gains some great songwriting material along the way.Throughout the season, The York remained steadfast in its mission to nurture new voices, reexamine the past, and bring compelling musical theatre to life for today's audiences.To provide support for the creators of new musical theatre and be a showcase for new musical theatre talent of all kinds.Continuing our longtime commitment to developing new musicals, The York Theatre held strong to that promise in the 2023-24 Season and provided our loyal audiences with 10 presentations in our Developmental Reading Series, presented at no cost to the public. Just like in our Mainstage productions, many of these performers and writers are proudly making their Off-Broadway debuts. Following the presentations, The York staff meet with the writers to provide feedback and guidance on the next stages of their show's development. On July 15, 2024, The York's celebrated NEO concert returned with an exciting lineup of work from 10 rising musical theatre writers. NEOshort for "New, Emerging, Outstanding"is our signature program honoring the voices shaping the future of the American musical. Since its debut in 2003 (captured on a beloved cast album by London's JAY Records), the NEO concert has become a must-see event for musical theatre fans and industry supporters alike. Many past participants have gone on to receive Tony Awards, Oscars, and even two Pulitzer Prizeswho's to say what's in store for this year's featured artists?This year's one-night-only benefit performance was hosted by Debra Walton (Don't Bother Me, I Can't Cope; Storyville), directed by Annette Jolles (Mark Felt Superstar; Bar Mitzvah Boy), with music direction by Beth Falcone (Unexpected Joy). More than just a concert, NEO serves as an incubator for the next generation of musical theatre creatorsoffering vital exposure and creating a clear pathway to future readings, workshops, and potential mainstage productions.To serve the community by presenting free or low-cost musical theatre performances to under-served audiences.Beyond our admission-free Developmental Reading Series, The York extended complimentary tickets to more than 4,500 audience members across our Mainstage productions, New2NY series, and select special events. Continuing our long-standing commitment to accessibility, we made it possible for individuals from under-resourced communitiesincluding students and older adultsto experience professional musical theatre at no cost, in a city where live performance has become increasingly out of reach for many. Among the organizations we partnered with were the Stein Center, the Mitchell-Lama Program, the Hudson Guild, and the Lenox Hill Senior Center. This spring, we launched a partnership with two Bronx high schools; 40 students from low socioeconomic backgrounds who are predominantly Black and Hispanic, most of whom had never before attended a theater performance, received free tickets to A Sign of the Times; students toured the theater and met with actors, energizing both the students and the actors.
