In 2024, the Salem Keizer Education Association was able to finalize a contract with Salem-Keizer Public Schools. SKEA made historic gains in this contract in areas including fewer restrictions for use of personal leave, a cost-of-living adjustment of 9.75% over the two year life of the contract, a workable definition of FTE (full time equivalency), and language to help protect class size at our elementary level. All of these are significant gains in addition to the many smaller advances made in contract language. Bargaining was a focal point because it lasted almost a year, including a declaration of impasse and a move to formal mediation. Resolving the contract without a strike was a great success. Additionally, we have worked hard to meet with every new licensed staff member hired by the district to talk to them about the benefits of SKEA membership. We are holding membership consistently above 90% and hope to see an increase as we enter our next bargain. The organization as a whole is functioning well with a high level of membership, healthy reserve funds, identified core values, and annual goals that are assessed at the end of each calendar year.
