Inside Southwest Detroits Community Storytelling programming this year deepened its commitment to young people exploring their world through creative technologies and hand-on engagement. Returning artist-in-residence, Anthony Valadez, led a summer storytelling lab where youth participants produced photo-based videos using their own images and narrated reflections. Each piece is an artifact of place, identity, and expereience guided by memory and visual detail as a truly multimedia mechanism of storytelling. Our summer celebration marked the lauch of Lowrider Garage, an intergenerational workshop where young people and adults learned how hydraulic systems operate directly from a custom builder who specializes in aircraft hydraulic setups. These projects extend storytelling outside of our screens and galleries. They connect creative work to in-person experiences and invite participants into relationship with culture, craft and one another. This sustains the work beyond the scope of any single workshop or event.
