To restore and protect the Little Falls Watershed, a vulnerable natural ecosystem nestled in Montgomery County, Maryland and Washington, D.C. We strive to restore and sustain the water quality, natural habitat, health and integrity of the watershed. We develop and apply diverse, innovative and successful programs to accomplish these goals; build awareness about the importance of these natural spaces to our environmentally sustainable future; and ensure that our creeks and their surrounding natural environment survive and thrive for their own sake, and the enjoyment and utilization of current and future generations.

Stewardship: we restore the water quality, natural habitat and ecology of the Little Falls Watershed through activities such as stream cleanup, habitat restoration, and removal of invasive plants. Some of our accomplishments in 2023 included: 1) Trash removal: over 269 volunteers removed 4,110 pounds of trash and 31 huge bags of cans and bottles from the local creek and adjacent parkland. 2) Habitat Restoration: We maintain four habitation restoration projects in the Bethesda Chevy Chase area. Some get minimal maintenance - weeding and replanting. Others, like the Green Acres Meadow restoration are being expanded to cover more area. We planted 25 more trees in the fall of 2023 in the Green Acres project. 3) One of core activities is non-native invasive weed removal from local park lands. In 2023, we hosted 44 community workdays and engaged 582 volunteers and freed 1,142 trees from strangling vines.

Science: we monitor the health of the Little Falls Branch through bacterial monitoring, salt monitoring, and benthic macroinvertebrate monitoring. Accomplishments in 2023 included discovering high levels of bacterial contamination in the creek and working with the local government to find the source of the problem. We have a team of 15 citizen scientists who test our creeks for fecal bacteria contamination at 8 locations during the summer months. Salt monitoring is done year round in 8 locations to assess the impact of winter road salt on the salinity of the creeks. A survey of the macroinvertebrates living in the creek is done quarterly to give us a Benthic Index of Biotic Integrity (BIBI) score the Little Falls Branch. This BIBI calculation gives us a good picture of the biological health of the creek

Education and Outreach: We build community awareness and appreciation of the Little Falls watershed through a newsletter, a website and activities such as public events and hikes. Accomplishments in 2023 included: 70 people joined the first day hike on New Years Day to follow the creek from its urban origin to its mouth at the Potomac River and learn about the challenges that an urban creek experiences.
