Program Service Accomplishments

Program 1

PARK PRESERVATION AND PROTECTION: A PROGRAM TO PROVIDE THE RESOURCES TO SUPPORT THE PROTECTION OF THE INTEGRITY AND NATURAL RESOURCES OF VIRUNGA NATIONAL PARK. THIS PROGRAM INCLUDES PROJECTS DESIGNED TO STRENGTHEN COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION IN SUPPORT OF THE PARK, REDUCE WILDLIFE AND HUMAN CONFLICTS, STOP POACHING ACTIVITY AND SUPPORT CONSERVATION INITIATIVES. THIS INCLUDES ENSURING THE EFFECTIVE PROTECTION OF THE PARK'S INHABITANTS AND PEOPLE TRAVELING ACROSS THE PARK'S ROADS. EXAMPLES OF THESE PROJECTS INCLUDE EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS, AIRWING SUPPORT, BLOODHOUND UNIT AND ELEPHANT PROTECTION PATROLS, GIS MAPPING PROJECTS, ELECTRIC FENCE DEPLOYMENT AND GENERAL SUPPORT FOR THE PARK ADMINISTRATION.

Program 2

RANGER SUPPORT: A PROGRAM TO PROVIDE SALARY SUPPLEMENTS, RATIONS, MEDICAL COSTS, TRANSPORTATION, FUEL AND SUPPLIES FOR VIRUNGA NATIONAL PARKFS ACTIVE RANGER FORCE. THIS INCLUDES THE RESTRUCTURING AND STRENGTHENING THE PARKS RANGER FORCE THROUGH THE TRAINING OF NEW RANGERS, FACILITATING THE ACQUISITION OF SERVICE VEHICLES, EQUIPMENT, AND OTHER SUPPLIES THAT HELP ENSURE THE SAFETY AND SECURITY OF THE PARK, THE RANGERS, AND THE LOCAL POPULATION. THIS PROGRAM HAS TWO CATEGORIES: CORE SUPPORT: SALARY SUPPLEMENTS, RATIONS, HEALTH CARE COVERAGE, TRANSPORTATION, COMMUNICATIONS EQUIPMENT AND DEFENSIVE HARDWARE.NON-CORE: TRAINING EQUIPMENT AND SUPPORT.
