EDLC works with law firms and legal NGOs,volunteer scientists and researchers, and community groups to protect the human rights of people in developing countries who are fighting to protect their environment. The number of individuals helped in each case ranged from one to tens of thousands, with the majority of cases being brought on behalf of communities of hundreds or thousands of individuals. In addition to other forms of assistance--including the recruitment and support of pro bono lawyers and scientists; legal analysis and briefing; and strategic guidance and support--EDLC provides funding for litigation expenses through agreements with lawyers and NGOs in developing countries. The objective of all of these efforts is to assist environmental defenders by helping to: 1) influence or stop development projects that threaten the health, way of life, and environment of affected communities; 2) obtain redress from corporations and governments for harms caused to communities by such projects; 3) address the drivers and impacts of climate change; and 4) safeguard the civil and political rights of environmental defenders.
