One-on-one tutoring and academic support. Last year, we provided tutoring at one to three days a week to 56 students. Tutor matches are carefully designed to meet students learning and personality profiles, ensuring that tutoring pairs remain consistent throughout the year. We also provide psychoeducational assessments to diagnose suspected learning differences; in-school advocacy, as requested by parents, for accommodations and advanced course enrollments; and back-to-school skills workshops. 100% reported increased understanding of their schoolwork. 100% reported increased participation in class. 100% reported that working with OpenDoors made them a better student. 100% reported feeling positively supported by their tutor.

97% of families reported improved academic mindsets, from improved grades to better attitudes about homework to showing more academic confidence. 90% of parents reported improved school attendance. For the past three years, 100% of students enrolled in OpenDoors have graduated from high school. In comparison, in 2023-2024, 81.4% of Black and 78.7% of economically disadvantaged students graduated from Asheville High School, both of which are decreases from the previous school year. (NC Dept. Public Instruction, 2023-2024.) Enrichment programming. Afterschool STEAM runs a Math Club and creates classes with STEAM providers, aligning activities with NC Standard Courses of Study. Programming develops college mindsets, internships and mentorships to identify and support career goals, identify best fit colleges, supports college and financial aid applications, and bridges college transitions with persistence support, including academic advising, financial support, and mentorship. Almost all OpenDoors students are first-gen college students. For the past three years, 81% of students who partner with OpenDoors have enrolled in Institutes of Higher Education. By comparison, in 2022-23, less than 10% of local economically disadvantaged high school graduates enrolled in some form of post-secondary education. (NC Dept. Public Instruction, 2022-2023; most recent data.) For the past three years, 93% of students supported by OpenDoors graduated or continued to matriculate in Institutes of Higher Education.
