When someone calls 211 (or 866-811-5695) or texts a Maine zip code to 898-211, they automatically connect to a live person in Maine 24 hours a day, seven days a week. 211 Maine's online directory is also available for the public to search at www.211Maine.org.211 Maine is a partnership between the United Ways of Maine, the Maine Department of Health and Human Services, and The Opportunity Alliance, which operates the contact center.Last year, 211 Maine Specialists fielded approximately 67,008 calls, texts, and emails. The top referral needs statewide from callers were for assistance with electric service payments, heating fuel payments, and housing searches. The program also operates several specialized helplines - including the Opiate Helpline and Problem Gambling Helpline and fielded general questions related to COVID-19 from March 2020 through March 2025.In times of crisis, 211 Maine plays a vital role in emergency response. During natural disasters, it supports Maine Emergency Management Agency by fielding calls, collecting data to assess need and severity, and directing people to heating shelters, cooling centers, and other emergency services.
