4b - For over 13 years the Mount Airy Main Street Association has run the the downtown Farmers Market. This event was created in response to residents requests for a local market offering local produce, meats, dairy and other products. Its purpose was and still is to service the community, fill a need for local, heathy, and fresh produce while supporting local agriculture. Several years ago the market started the Nutrition Bucks program. Using grant funds, the market offered vouchers administered by the local food bank to individuals and families in the need of food assistance. Every year, a portion of the grant funds are dispensed directly to Mount Airy Area Net, our local food bank, to provide some assistance in their on-going program of support to needed individuals and families. Any income in excess of expenses is used to pay annual startup costs to put the market on a solid financial footing for the start of the next year.
