FIORDLAND EQUESTRIAN THOROUGHBRED REHABILITATION PROGRAM

Equine Rehabilitation Program The Fiordland Equestrian Thoroughbred Rehabilitation Program provides rehabilitation and recovery services for retired Thoroughbred racehorses transitioning out of the racing industry. Horses entering the program frequently require veterinary evaluation, nutritional support, and controlled conditioning to recover from the physical demands associated with racing. Program services include veterinary care, farrier services, dental care, specialized feeding programs, and structured turnout in a pasture-based environment designed to promote physical recovery and long-term soundness. Horses receive individualized care plans focused on restoring health and preparing them for retraining and future placement. This program supports the organization's mission by stabilizing horses physically and mentally before they begin retraining for second careers. In 2025, the organization received and commenced rehabilitation on five horses.

The organization provides retraining services for rehabilitated Thoroughbred horses to prepare them for second careers outside of racing. Horses are evaluated for temperament, soundness, and aptitude for various riding disciplines. Program activities include groundwork, saddle training, desensitization, and development of basic riding skills necessary for safe handling and riding by future owners. Horses are progressively conditioned and trained to transition from the racing environment to traditional equestrian use. This program increases the adoptability of retired racehorses and supports successful long-term placements. In 2025, the organization retrained five horses.
