SINCE ITS FOUNDING IN 1872, THE OUTAGAMIE COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY HAS BEEN THE TRUSTED STEWARD OF APPLETON AND FOX VALLEY HISTORY. NOW AFFECTIONATELY KNOWN AS THE HISTORY MUSEUM AT THE CASTLE, DUE TO ITS LOCATION IN A FORMER MASONIC TEMPLE, THE ORGANIZATION IS A THRIVING CULTURAL INSTITUTION WITH DEEP TIES TO THE LOCAL COMMUNITY. THE HISTORY MUSEUM CONTINUALLY SEEKS TO INSPIRE PEOPLE TO DISCOVER AND APPRECIATE THE RICH HISTORY OF THE FOX VALLEY THROUGH EXHIBITIONS, EDUCATION AND COLLECTIONS. THE HISTORY MUSEUM GREATLY EXPANDED ITS OFFERINGS IN 2024 BY COMPLETING A MAJOR PERMANENT LOCAL HISTORY EXHIBIT, YOU ARE HERE. AFTER 5 YEARS OF PLANNING AND A SUCCESSFUL CAPITAL CAMPAIGN THIS CUSTOM DESIGNED EXHIBITION SHOWCASES FOX VALLEY HISTORY, GEOGRAPHY, AND CULTURE. YOU ARE HERE TELLS A COMPREHENSIVE HISTORY OF THE LANDSCAPE, PEOPLES, AND CULTURES THAT HAVE DEFINED THE FOX VALLEY SINCE ANCIENT TIMES WITH UNIQUE LOCAL ARTIFACTS AND STUNNING GRAPHICS. THIS EXHIBITION HIGHLIGHTS THE BEST OF THE MUSEUM'S COLLECTIONS AND SERVES AS A CORE EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE FOR VISITORS AND LOCAL SCHOOLS. IN 2024, THE HISTORY MUSEUM HAD OVER 10,000 VISITORS INCLUDING MORE THAN 2,000 K-12 STUDENTS. THE HISTORY MUSEUM CONTINUALLY ENGAGES AUDIENCES BEYOND THE MUSEUM'S WALLS. THE HISTORY MUSEUM OFFERS FREE TRAVELING POP-UP EXHIBITS ABOUT WOMEN'S SUFFRAGE, HOMELESSNESS, AND BLACK HISTORY. OVER 4,000 PEOPLE SAW THESE EXHIBITS AT SCHOOLS, LIBRARIES, RELIGIOUS INSTITUTIONS, AND BUSINESSES THROUGHOUT THE COMMUNITY. NOTABLY, IN 2024 THE MUSEUM ADDED OUR AFGHAN NEIGHBORS AS A NEW EXHIBIT TO ITS CATALOGUE OF TRAVELING POP-UP EXHIBITS. WORLD RELIEF FOX VALLEY AND THE HISTORY MUSEUM PARTNERED TO CONDUCT ORAL HISTORY INTERVIEWS WITH EIGHT AFGHAN REFUGEES FORCED TO FLEE AFGHANISTAN IN 2021 AND RESETTLE IN THE FOX CITIES. THEIR STORIES BECAME THE BASIS FOR THIS NEW GROUNDBREAKING EXHIBITION. THE HISTORY MUSEUM ALSO CONTINUED ITS POPULAR GET UP & GO WALKING TOUR SERIES. OVER 400 PEOPLE PARTICIPATED IN TEN UNIQUE TOURS. THIS CORE ADULT EDUCATION PROGRAM BRINGS HISTORY TO THE PRESENT ON THE STREETS OF APPLETON.
