The Minnesota Academy of Science held the 2024 Minnesota State Science & Engineering Fair (SSEF) at the St. Paul River Centre in downtown St. Paul. SSEF took place as a one day, in-person event with virtual components. Fairs was utilized as the online registration and virtual presentation materials platform. Participants and their families engaged in enrichment activities including 15 exhibitor booths and the Bell Museum traveling planetarium. The event concluded with a keynote and Special Awards Reception. Evaluation of the changes made to SSEF in 2023 were completed post fair. It was decided to once again hold a one day event and maintain the changes to the presentation style (quad chart format). The presentation guidelines were updated for 2024 and allowed for models in 2024, based on feedback received. This year, 356 students, representing 302 projects and 60 schools, participated. Participation was up. Students submitted required materials, including a video, quad chart and SRC paperwork. A total of 172 grand awards judges registered to score projects.

The Fostering Opportunities and Resources in STEM Education (FORSE) program supports both formal science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education in schools and informal STEM learning experiences for students from all over Minnesota. FORSE activities meet the identified needs of each educational partner site, provide resources and support to teachers, and increase student self-confidence, interest, and knowledge of careers related to STEM. This year, MAS served more then 4500 students through FORSE. Educators receiving FORSE services enthusiastically endorse the program.

The Minnesota Academy of Science held the Minnesota High School and Middle School Science Bowls on Saturday 1/20/24 and Saturday 2/10/24, respectively, with 240 students from 23 schools participating. The winning teams represented Minnesota in the National Science Bowl held in person in Washington, DC from April 25-April 29 2024. The two MN champion teams?Wayzata HS Team 1 for the 7th year in a row and Minnetonka MS East Team 1 for the second time in their second year of competing?represented the state very well at the National Science Bowl. Wayzata HS reached the top 6 nationally, and Minnetonka MS East reached the top 8. Both bowls included additional activities for students to participate in when they had breaks, including Hamline physics lab tours and an electronic circuit activity facilitated by the UM Society of Women Engineers. The events also included well-received Meet the Scientists panel sessions featuring competition volunteers talking about their STEM-related jobs and responding to student questions.
