To provide a framework for how the arts and sustainability can be linked in innovative ways to create cities that help us redefine how we live our lives, use our resources, how we communicate, educate, work, and collaborate. City as Living Laboratory (CaLL)conceives of the city as a living laboratory where artists and designers collaborate with scientists, other experts and policy makers to create immediate experiential impact from research and planning initiatives. The goal is to make sustainability personal, visceral, tangible, and encourage citizen action.

In Fiscal Year 23, CALL facilitated workshops and artist-led walks, as well as the crowd-sourced creation of the Tibbetts Estuary Tapestry, a quilt embroidered by community members to evoke a vision for greening the neighborhood conceived by artists Matthew Lpez-Jensen and Ana de la Cueva. The assembly of the Tapestry was preceded by a series of both online and in-person embroidery workshops. In the Fall of 2021, we organized both online conversations related to all our projects and in-person walks in Manhattans Chinatown, Milwaukee, and the Berkshires, while in the Spring of 2022 we supported the initial stages of engagement activities by artists Manuel Acevedo, Miguel Braceli, and Kamala Sankaram. In May 2023, CALL collaborated with artist Nicols Dumit Estvez Raful Espejo Ovalles to implement Growing a Green Heart, a music, movement, and drawing workshop in Van Cortlandt Park.
