Training Program: In poor regions where access to state health services is limited, Indigenous midwives often provide essential maternal & child healthcare. GPA provides these health workers with training in evidence-based pediatric primary care, prenatal care, birth techniques & management, recognition of risk factors, danger signs, newborn care & a protocol for emergency-care response. In 2023 we worked with 400 midwives & health promoters in Mexico & Guatemala, and provided 40 traditional midwives with leadership skills. We worked with 126 adults through our Women Caring for Women program to provide them the tools to help reduce gender-based violence at the household & community levels. We also trained 370 medical staff to provide culturally respectful care to Mayan women. Our programs benefitted more than 1 million people.

Small Grants Program: GPA funds well-conceived, sustainable grassroots health projects known to have a significant impact on maternal & child health designed by local communities with difficult access to quality healthcare services. We provide financial assistance and training in project management to empower groups to achieve long-term impact and sustainability. In 2023, GPA supported six community-driven projects, including working with nearly 300 women and children in Guatemala and Mexico in order to reduce the severe malnutrition afflicting their communities and prevent respiratory diseases and burns in children. The projects strengthened the skills of 145 health promoters in Mayan communities and promoted maternal and child health services for Indigenous women by Indigenous women benefitting appr. 10,000 people.
