Our mission is to Remember the Artist. IAM takes on and cares for the works of brilliant, under-represented artists after they pass on. IAM provides secure, intelligent care of artists' works while documenting, positioning and promoting each collection. IAM is invested in educating the public about the works of under-represented artists, ensuring this significant cultural contribution is not lost in future generations. IAM offers public access to each collection through our digital archive and exhibition efforts. IAM also seeks out exhibition opportunities in conjunction with other arts organizations, and pursues scholarly publications and films on each of our artists.

Exhibition-Carlo Pittore-Public Education. This program was developed to share Carlo Pittore's artwork and ephemera with the general public. IAM worked collaboratively with a local gallery to mount an epic retrospective exhibition focused on Pittore's exploration of identity as medium. We hosted a public dinner to celebrate the artist and to welcome the local community into our space. We also exhibited video footage of Pittore that hadn't been seen since the 1970s. The exhibit was covered in the press and generated rave reviews from professionals, scholars, artists, and the general public.

Exhibition - Josefina Auslender - Public education. This program was developed to pair the work of Josefina Auslender with a local contemporary artist from a much younger generation - cementing the connection between her work and the current generation. The selected works focused on loss, memory and the processing of tragedy. IAM worked collaboratively with a local gallery to mount a two-person exhibition of the artists' work, inviting curators, scholars, and the general public. Sadly, this exhibition coincided with a terrible shooting here in our Maine community. IAM was able to extend the duration of the exhibition to offer a space of solace for those folks in the grieving process.

Archiving Project: Carlo Pittore - Public Education. This program was developed to inventory, document and preserve the life's work of Carlo Pittore, a male, Jewish, gay artist who was instrumental in the fight for artists' rights. Pittore was a significant figure in the mail art movement, an influential teacher, activist, and painter. IAM is working to ensure his life's work is properly documented and digitized, offering the public unprecedented access to his collection. Pittore maintained correspondence with hundreds of active artists during his lifetime, including Keith Haring, E.F. Higgins, Buster Cleveland, John Held, Jr., Lucy Lippard, Coco Gordon and more. This program will result in an updated appraisal of Pittore's collection, a digitized archive of his most significant artworks and correspondences, and a full inventory of the collection. This year we documented and archived 1,000 works on paper, adding them to our online database.
