In 2023, Deep Vellum turned 10, and this year we fulfilled our mission to bring the world into conversation in more ways than ever before. For 10 years we have bridged the literary gap between international writers, English language readers, and our local literary community here in Dallas, Texas. In 2023, as our authors were awarded international prizes of the highest order, as our community members gathered to reflect on the history of our city and to use literature to envision a better future, we continued to give a platform to international and local writers and readers alike. We celebrated by publishing 57 new translated books, originally written in 12 languages by authors from 14 countries. Our Norwegian author Jon Fosse, who has published 7 books through our Dalkey Archive Press imprint, was awarded the 2023 Nobel Prize for Literature! We hosted and organized over 100 literary events at home in Dallas and beyond. We held our first-ever poetry festival at Dallas's Klyde Warren Park, where children and adults rubbed elbows with the best poets in North Texas to celebrate National Poetry Month. 6 Deep Vellum writers appeared at the Texas Book Festival in Austin. Ukrainian author Andrey Kurkov was invited to the Vancouver Festival of Writers and Toronto International Festival of Authors, presented by Margaret Atwood and in conversation with Masha Gessen, and Kurkov also came to discuss his work in Houston presented by Inprint, and to Austin, presented by the Austin Public Library. We published 2 works of Black history in Dallas Ernest McMillan's memoir of the Civil Rights Movement in Dallas, Standing, and Alan Govenars history, Deep Ellum and Central Track, to continue the conversation from our city-wide book club by the name of Big D Reads last year. Romanian writer Mircea Cartarescus novel Solenoid won the Los Angeles Times Book Prize in April, and that month he visited Dallas for 2 events, including our 10th anniversary celebration at The Wild Detectives bookstore, while on tour across the country to sold-out audiences in 5 cities hailed as the breakthrough for Romanian literature in the United States. Uzma Aslam Khan, originally of Pakistan, now a professor at Amherst, was awarded the Massachusetts Book of the Year Award for Fiction for her novel The Miraculous True History of Nomi Ali. In October, award-winning author Dave Eggers presented his new novel The Eyes and the Impossible at our bookstore. Our teen book club led by high school students from public, private, and charter schools across Dallas met monthly in the store to discuss literary work, as did our monthly book club discussing Deep Vellums backlist books. In 2023, Paper City Magazine hailed Deep Vellum as one of Dallas's best bookstores, and D Magazine hailed Deep Vellum as The Best Bookstore for Local Authors in Dallas. An article in D CEO magazine in March 2023 profiled Deep Vellum founder and CEO, How Will Evans Became an Accidental (and Wildly Successful) Entrepreneur, and a Texas Monthly article in October 2023 examined Deep Vellums role in turning Dallas into the national capital for international books. In 2023, Deep Vellum donated 25 copies of Andrey Kurkov's Diary of an Invasion to employees of Friesens, the printing company (based in Altona, Canada) that printed the book. Friesens, which employees many Ukrainian refugees, decided to start a book club to give their employees a space to process and understand the ongoing war in Ukraine. We donated 20 books by Carmen Boullosa (Mexico) and Julia Cimafijieva (Belarus) to Words Without Borders as part of their 20th anniversary celebrations, and we donated 125 copies of our books to Art Resources Transfer to provide free books of literature, poetry, and nonfiction to public schools, libraries, and prisons throughout New York State.
