Food Equality Initiative (FEI) fights for nutrition security and health equity for all. The Food Is Medicine Access Program (FIMAP) is FEI's direct service program that provides clients who qualify as food insecure with a monthly voucher of $155 to $250 and home delivery of voucher-purchased and self-selected food from 2 online marketplaces. Selected foods met their diet and preference needs. In 2023, FEI provided 700 nourishing food deliveries to clients enrolled in FIMAP. With increased access to appropriate foods that "opened the door ... to try different styles of gluten-free foods that are delicious and healthy," clients were able to improve their quality of life. One client reported "It's one of those too good to be true moments! But it really is true!" FEI received recognition for its local impact when awarded the Heart of the Community Award from CareSource.

Food Equality Initiative's collaborative research with Northwestern University, Baylor/Texas Children's Hospital, and University of Kansas Health System strengthens its evidence-based approach as a follow up study to its initial research study with Stanford University. The studies assess nutrition intervention methods for patients with food allergies. Groundwork for applying for GusNIP funding began in 2023 through establishing working agreements with the Kansas City Food Hub and Food Connect. FEI's advocacy efforts served as a voice for low-income individuals diagnosed with diet-treated and managed conditions through raising awareness about the various challenges and barriers to accessing safe, diet-appropriate food.
