EASTERN AREA HEALTH EDUCATION CENTER, INC. OPERATIONS ARE CONDUCTED THROUGH AFFILIATION AGREEMENTS WITH HOSPITALS AND OTHER HEALTH CARE ORGANIZATIONS. THE PRIMARY PURPOSE OF THE AHEC ORGANIZATION IS TO PROVIDE CONTINUING EDUCATION AND TRAINING TO HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONALS. THE ORGANIZATION'S BOARD OF DIRECTORS CONSISTS OF INDIVIDUALS APPOINTED BY 14 EASTERN NORTH CAROLINA HOSPITALS, EAST CAROLINA UNIVERSITY, AND VARIOUS OTHER AREA MEDICAL/EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS.

VARIOUS CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS AND RELATED ACTIVITIES WHICH PROVIDE CONTINUING EDUCATION FOR THE SCHOOL OF MEDICINE, NURSING, MENTAL HEALTH, AND ALLIED HEALTH. THESE PROGRAMS ALSO PROVIDE CLINICAL EDUCATION SERVICES AND CONTINUING EDUCATION FOR THE PERINATAL, RURAL PHARMACY, AND RURAL/PRIMARY CARE PROGRAMS. WE NOW RUN THE ENTIRE STATEWIDE LACTATION SUPPORT PROGRAM, AND WE HAVE HAD A MEASURABLY LARGE IMPROVEMENT IN THE NUMBER OF MOTHERS CHOOSING TO BREAST FEED. WE HAVE ALSO RECENTLY BEEN AWARDED SIGNIFICANT GRANTS TO SUPPORT RESULTS BASED ACCOUNTABILITY ACROSS THE STATE AND TALENT PIPELINE MANAGEMENT FOR HEALTHCARE WORKFORCE IN OUR REGION.
