LITTER MANAGEMENT & PREVENTION: Keep Prince William Beautiful (KPWB) organizes community cleanups and manages the Adopt-A-Spot and Adopt-A-Shelter programs that support litter reduction and prevention across Prince William County. Residents, civic organizations, religious groups, and businesses volunteer in community cleanups and can adopt a particular area or bus shelter for cleanups. The commitment of the AAS program is a minimum of two cleanups per year and two cleanups per month for the Adopt-A-Shelter program with reporting requirements for both that details the number of volunteers, and the duration and amount of litter collected. Cleanup data from all programs is collected and complied in annual totals and submitted to Prince William County Solid Waste Division (PWC) and the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ). Last year KPWB managed over fifty-nine AAS and community cleanup events with over twenty-four-hundred volunteer hours and having collected over seven thousand pounds of litter and diverted over twenty-one-thousand pounds of plastic bags and food wastes from the landfill. KPWB also conducts litter surveys and shopping center surveys on behalf of PWC. Volunteers sign up for the program and receive training on how to assess the levels of litter at predesignated locations throughout the county. A rating scale of 1-4 is used based on the Community Appearance Index from Keep America Beautiful. The data collected from the surveys is then reported to PWC and used by KPWB to task out volunteers to clear the area or over 80 shopping centers of litter.

RECYCLING EDUCATION AND OUTREACH: Keep Prince William Beautiful provides recycling education through outreach to the residents, businesses, organizations and partners throughout the County on PWC statues, environmental impacts and importance of recycling and reducing by reuse the amount of items sent to the landfill. KPWB conducts, sponsors and participates in events throughout the County that specifically target recycling education and distributes PWCs Recycling Guide. KPWB also sponsors several composting programs throughout the County to divert food wastes from the landfill and educates the public on the importance of recycling food wastes. Utilization, education events attended, hours and individual outreach data is collected and reported to PWC and Virginia DEQ.
