During 2023 Middleburg HUmane Foundation (MHF), a designated no-kill shelter, took in 650 cats, dogs, equines, livestock, pocket pets and reptiles. MHF also participated in an animal transport program which is a collaboration with other rescue groups to save pets from possible euthanasia. With MHF's operational full-service surgery and clinic, MHF was able to take in animals which require medical care our partners are not able to provide. This is a great benefit for our partners in rural areas who do not have the resources to provide these services. MHF was able to find homes for 493 animals in 2023, and transport another 112 animals to other approved rescue partners which have a larger demographic need for adoptable pets.

Clinic: Our in-house veterinary clinic was fully operational during 2023 with a combination of paid staff and volunteer veterinarians, veterinary technicians and veterinary assistants. Volunteer vets were able to donate a total of 230 hours to help with the TNR program. This team was able to help 549 animals, including 254 shelter pets and 295 feral cats. The veterinarians performed routine services such as physical exams, spay/neuter surgeries and vaccinations, as well as more complex procedures like amputations, eye repair, polyp and mass removals.

Community Cat Program: MHF's community cat program directly impacted 651 cats during 2023. We provided Trap-Neuter-Return for 344 stray and feral cats from 82 sites in Fauquier and surrounding counties. Almost 168 of the TNR cats were female, which equates to approximately 2,016 kittens not being added to the community cat population in the years to come. There were 8 TNR clinics held during the year and 100% of the surgeries took place in the shelter clinic. 69 adult cats were adopted out as either indoor or working barn cats. MHF's Kitten College program continued to train fosters for nursing mothers and their kittens. Stray or feral kittens, were vetted at the shelter, placed into temporary homes for socialization and then adopted out or transported to other approved rescue partners.
