THE UNIVERSITY MONTESSORI SCHOOL CHOSE TO BECOME A 501 (C)(3) ORGANIZATION TO BETTER MEET ITS GOAL OF CREATING A DIVERSE MONTESSORI SCHOOL SETTING. BY BECOMING A NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION, CONTRIBUTIONS AND GRANTS WOULD BE MORE EASILY SECURED TO PROVIDE SCHOLARSHIPS AND ADDITIONAL INSTRUCTIONAL EXPERIENCES FOR THE STUDENTS. UMS HAS BEEN A PROUD INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY SINCE 1978. THE SCHOOL HAS CONTINUED TO EXPAND CULTURAL EXPERIENCES FOR ITS STUDENTS AND HAS CONTINUED TO DIVERSIFY ITS STUDENT POPULATION BY RACE, ETHNIC BACKGROUND AND SOCIO-ECONOMIC STATUS.
