Johnson was a piedmont blue musician, national endownment for the arts heritage fellow and supporter of the civil rights movement. Each year unique music related programming includes symposiums, panel discusssions, art exhibits, theatrical productions and historic re-enactments. Each year an Edu-training theme undergrids the festival and explores the relationship between music, economic, and the social, political and civil rights expressed in music.
