Bay Area Womens Sports Initiative

BAWSI Girls introduces elementary school girls to physical activity, sports and leadership through fun games that build fitness and motor coordination. Using pedometers to track their steps, girls race, jump, and hula-hoop through stations of high-energy activities focused on goal-setting, teamwork, sport-specific skills, healthy competition in sports, and leadership. BAWSI coaches create opportunities for leadership conversations featuring words of the week and interweave overarching themes of respect and responsibility throughout the session. Each week in small groups coaches teach basic mindfulness techniques to help pave the way for a lifetime of wellness. 5th graders have additional 15-minute weekly leadership discussions and lead a BAWSI session. In addition to weekly BAWSI program, all BAWSI participants are invited to a BAWSI Game Day field trip at a local college womens sporting event. The intent of Game Day is to expose girls to healthy, active role models, and provide exposure to a college campus, planting the seeds for a future that includes college.Total Enrollment - 1,037

The BAWSI Rollers program provides fun, adaptive physical activities for girls and boys with physical, cognitive and hearing disabilities. Through a fun and active curriculum that includes games like basketball, soccer, and sharks and minnows The BAWSI Rollers program helps participants develop hand-eye coordination, strength, confidence, and a sense of independence. Weekly sessions include activities focused on goal setting, teamwork, and healthy competition, as well as spirited conversations about self-respect, responsibility, and leadership.Total Enrollment - 175
