Annual Assembly The Assembly program is developed by the SCAFP Continuing Professional Development Committee for family physicians and other health care providers, offering a variety of continuing medical education topics pertinent to patient care in a daily practice. Each presentation has specific objectives so that at the conclusion of the program the learner will have a working and applicable understanding of the topic. Topics included Physician Heal Thyself; Top Public Health Issues in South Carolina; Updates in the Management of CKD in Primary Care; Cases in the Community: Optimizing Treatment and Considering Weight Management as a Primary Goal in People with Type 2 Diabetes; Thriving in a Value-Based Program - Appropriately Capturing Clinicians Work; Becoming a Value-Add for Your Practice, Your Patients, and Yourself; and Evidenced-Based Drug Therapy Update. A two-hour presentation addressing Prescribing & Monitoring Controlled Substances, entitled We Still Need to Talk About Pain Meds- The Opioid Epidemic and Substance Abuse Disorder (Part I and II). One dermatology workshop on Skin of Color. One Knowledge Self-Assessment (KSAs) Working Group on Pain Management for members working on their Board re-certification.

Governmental Affairs Advisors/Expenses each year. Each year, the Academy reviews and addresses legislation introduced or pending in the South Carolina General Assembly that impacts patients, patient care, and the practice of family medicine. To proactively navigate the legislative and governmental affairs arena, the Academy contracts with Maynard Nexsen (formerly Nexsen Pruet, LLC). The Governmental Affairs Advisors offer legislative information, engage with elected officials, and advocate for the family medicine perspective to the General Assembly and state agencies.

Students, Residents and Outreach The South Carolina Academy co-hosts an annual SC Family Medicine Interest Day to encourage medical students to choose family medicine as a specialty and a SC Family Medicine residency program upon graduation from medical school. The goal is to ensure there will be a supply of family physicians to take care of the growing health care needs of our state. Eleven Resident members gave scholarly presentations during the Annual Assembly. Fourteen Residents received the Outstanding Resident Award at their residency program graduation.
