IN FY 2024, WE SUCCESSFULLY CHALLENGED A CITY OF MIAMI ORDINANCE CRIMINALIZING REQUESTS FOR DONATIONS, THEREBY AVOIDING HUNDREDS OF NEEDLESS ARRESTS OF HOMELESS PEOPLE. WE SUCCESSFULLY OBJECTED TO A RULE CHANGE THAT WOULD HAVE RESTRICTED THE ABILITY OF INCARCERATED PEOPLE TO COMMUNICATE WITH ATTORNEYS. WE FILED AND SETTLED A LAWSUIT ON BEHALF OF THE FAMILY OF AN INCARCERATED MAN WHO COMMITTED SUICIDE IN PRISON, RESULTING IN A POLICY CHANGE THAT REQUIRES MORE THOROUGH MENTAL HEALTH REVIEWS. WE FILED THREE OTHER LAWSUITS CHALLENGING OTHER ANTI-PANHANDLING ORDINANCES, SETTLING TWO OF THEM RESULTING IN REPEALS OF THE LAWS THAT HAVE AVOIDED DOZENS OF NEEDLESS ARRESTS. WE SECURED A FINAL INJUNCTION IN A PENDING CHALLENGE TO A FORT LAUDERDALE PANHANDLING ORDINANCE. WE CHALLENGED THE IMPOSITION OF A COSTS OF INCARCERATION LIEN AGAINST AN INCARCERATED MAN. WE CONTINUED MONITORING OUR DISABILITY RIGHTS SETTLEMENT WITH THE FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS, WHICH HELPS APPROXIMATELY 15,000 TO 20,000 PEOPLE IN PRISON WITH PHYSICAL DISABILITIES BY ENSURING THEY GET THE ACCOMMODATIONS THEY NEED TO LIVE WITH DIGNITY, INDEPENDENCE, AND SAFETY. WE CONTINUED ADVOCATING FOR THE DOZENS OF INDIVIDUALS WHO CONTACTED US FOR ASSISTANCE.
