THE PARKINSON'S ASSOCIATION OF SOUTHWEST FLORIDA (PASWFL/THE ASSOCIATION) PROVIDES FREE PROGRAMS AND SERVICES WHICH HELP RESIDENTS OF COLLIER AND LEE COUNTIES, FL WITH PARKINSON'S (PD) AND RELATED NEURODEGENERATIVE DISEASES TO LIVE WELL. OUR OFFERINGS INCLUDE A VARIETY OF EVIDENCED-BASED ACTIVITIES, PROVEN TO HELP IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF LIFE, AS WELL AS EDUCATE, ENRICH, AND EMPOWER THOSE TOUCHED BY PD AND THEIR CARE PARTNERS. FLORIDA, PARTICULARLY OUR AREA IN SOUTHWEST FLORIDA, HAS A HIGH PREVALENCE OF PD DUE -IN PART- TO THE MEAN AGE OF THE POPULATION. NATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS - NO RELATION TO OUR ASSOCIATION - SHOW FLORIDA AS #2 IN THE UNITED STATES BASED UPON POPULATION PREVALENCE, OR 79,990 PEOPLE WITH PD. RESEARCH SHOWS THESE TWO COUNTIES TO BE HOME TO BETWEEN 7,000 AND 10,000 DIAGNOSED WITH PD. WE OFFER MORE THAN 130 FREE PROGRAMS MONTHLY, PRIMARILY GENTLE MOVEMENT INCLUDING SEATED YOGA AND TAI CHI (8-10 WEEKLY), ADVANCED EXERCISE (11-13 WEEKLY), SPEECH EXERCISE (6 WEEKLY), NEED-SPECIFIC SUPPORT GROUPS (7 WEEKLY), EDUCATIONAL/INFORMATION TALKS (AVG 3 MONTHLY), POWERFUL TOOLS FOR CAREGIVERS. PROGRAMS ARE OFFERED IN-PERSON AND VIRTUALLY. ALL GATHERINGS (INCLUDING VIRTUAL) ARE OPPORTUNITIES TO REDUCE THE ISOLATION FELT BY MANY WITH PD. PASWFL CONTINUES TO INFORM THE COMMUNITY ABOUT PD, PROVIDE RESOURCES FOR THOSE NEWLY DIAGNOSED WITH PD, AND ADD ACTIVITIES AND SESSIONS TO THE OFFERINGS BASED UPON AVAILABILITY OF PROFESSIONAL AND CERTIFIED FACILITATORS AND APPROPRIATE VENUES. OUR MONTHLY NEW MEMBER ORIENTATIONS AND MONTHLY LUNCH BUNCH GATHERINGS PROVIDE SAFE SPACES FOR PEOPLE TO TALK ABOUT THEIR PD JOURNEYS AND TO LEARN FROM OTHERS.THE ANNUAL LIVING WELL WITH PD EDUCATION SYMPOSIUM, BEGUN IN 2018, FEATURES NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED LEADERS IN PD RESEARCH AND TREATMENT. PD TALKS, APPROXIMATELY 38 HELD THROUGHOUT THE YEAR, ARE TOPIC-SPECIFIC AND PRESENTED BY PROFESSIONALS CERTIFIED IN THEIR FIELDS - MEDICAL (MDS, MD, OT, PT), EXERCISE, THERAPY, FINANCIAL, LEGAL AND MUCH MORE.
