The primary purpose of the Humane Society of Marion County, Inc. is to provide food, shelter and medical care for homeless dogs and cats while finding them new homes. With the mission of preventing cruelty, suffering, and over-population of animals, there are also additional programs available. HSMC offers low-cost spay/neuter certificates for animal owners that provide a significant discount on the surgery at local veterinarians. We have a large volunteer base with over 500 active volunteers who donate well over 1,000 hours per month. These volunteers assist with socializing pets and providing staff support. Community outreach programs seek to increase adoptions and educate the community. These programs include weekly adoptions at PetSmart, a humane education program for elementary school students in after care programs, a successful reading program for children ages 6-12 in which they read to shelter dogs, and many more.
