Programs - Fiscal Year Ended October 31, 2024Film Screening: Jim Hubbard: Nostalgia, November 19, 2023Nostalgia is a new collaboration between filmmaker Jim Hubbard (United in Anger: A History of ACT UP) and composers Chris Cochrane and Kevin Bud Jones, who performed the live soundtrack. Recollections of friends who have died restore an emotional connection to the devastation of the AIDS crisis, a reminder that life persists despite loss and change.Event: World AIDS Day 2022, December 1, 2023The New York City AIDS Memorial marked the annual observance of World AIDS Day with an afternoon and evening of free and public programming with partners including Housing Works, Out of the Darkness, and Queer Soup Night.Exhibition: Jim Hodges: Craigs closet, through May 29, 2024After going on view in June 2023, the exhibition of Jim Hodges: Craigs closet, a new year-long sculptural installation at the New York City AIDS Memorial, closed on May 29, 2024. The work later travelled to the New Orleans Museum of Art.Event: Legends of Drag, June 5, 2024Featuring: Egyptt LaBeija, Lawanda Jackson, Princess Diandra, Ruby Rims, and Simone with emcee Linda Simpson. This year, in celebration of Pride Month, we again partnered with the creative team behind the portrait book Legends of Drag (Abrams, 2022) to present a live, on-site revue at the Whitney Museum, all of whom paved the way for the drag renaissance of today. Campy, brash, witty, and most of all talented dancers, lip-synch artists, and live singers, these queens are survivors, thrivers, and cultural ambassadors. As both drag performers and trans folks have increasinglybecome political targets and scapegoats, uplifting these trailblazers and sharing in their wisdom and joy is one of the most potent antidotes available in our arsenal.Installation: Agosto Machado & Devin Antheus, June 511, 2024On June 5, Long-Term Survivors HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, floral stylist Devin Antheus invited legendary artist Agosto Machado to collaborate on an installation at the New York City AIDS Memorial. This installation, which took over the Memorial's central fountain, was created in honor of the start of New York's LGBTQ+ Pride Month and the over 110,000 New Yorkers lost to the AIDS epidemic, including many creative forces, many of whom were close friends of Machado. Within the installation of calla lilies and delphiniums, Machado placed photographs of these friends, many of whom remain cultural figureheads today, including Peter Hujar, Ethyl Eichelberger, and Cookie Mueller.Event: A Remembrance, June 15, 2024This afternoon of written work, performance, music, and art centered on the concept of remembering those lost to encourage re?ection and renewal was curated by multidisciplinary artist Alex Stadler and featured performances by aAliy A. Muhammad, the Bergamot Quartet with mezzo-soprano Elisa Sutherland performing a work by Kinan Abouh-afach, and Jessica Hecht.Event: David Wojnarowicz 70 Years, September 14, 2024On the occasion of what would have been his 70th birthday, we staged a production of David Wojnarowiczs seminal monologues, The Waterfront Journals. Readers included Tommy Turner, James Romberger, Marguerite Van Cook, Peter McGough, Nayland Blake, Morgan Bassichis, Paul Soileau, and Pamela Sneed, with introductions by Amy Scholder, were accompanied by the band Rimbaud Hattiecomprised of Wojnarowiczs former 3 Teens Kill 4 bandmates Doug Bressler and Julie Hair, along with John Kelly.Event: Empowered Voices: Women Living With HIV/AIDS, September 28, 2024The New York City AIDS Memorial welcomed the Generations Project to produce an afternoon of live storytelling, focusing on the stories of six women living with HIV/AIDS, which have been too often overlooked or marginalized throughout the epidemic. It was organized alongside activist Shirlene Cooper and featured members of the Visual AIDS Women's Empowerment Art Therapy Group, which Cooper founded.Performance: Philip Glass: String Quartet No. 4 (Buczak), Performed by Mivos Quartet, October 27, 2024The spirit of visual artist Brian Buczak (1954-1987) is memorialized in the fourth string quartet of Philip Glass (1937-), one of the composers most intimate works. In 2024, what would have been Buczaks 70th year of life, the acclaimed Mivos Quartet performed Glasss tribute in a free concert organized by composer Nick Hallett. The October 27th performance included introductory remarks by Bracken Hendricks and Sur Rodney (Sur).
