PROGRAM SERVICE ACCOMPLISHMENTS THE FOUNDATION CONTINUES TO BE COMMITTED TO FUNDING COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH IN NEUROSCIENCES AT DUKE UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF MEDICINE AS WELL AS AT OTHER ACADEMIC MEDICAL CENTERS. FUNDED ARE FACULTY PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATORS, POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWS, AND GRADUATE STUDENTS. THE RESEARCH IS CONCERNED WITH FUTHERING THE KNOWLEDGE AVAILABLE ABOUT CAUSES AND POTENTIAL TREATMENTS FOR ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE AND RELATED NEUROLOGICAL DISORDERS. THE FOUNDATION ALSO FUNDS THE RUTH K. BROAD SEMINAR SERIES IN NEUROBIOLOGY AND DISEASE, BRINGING NOTED SCIENTISTS TO DUKE'S CAMPUS THROUGHOUT THE ACADEMIC YEAR TO SHARE RESEARCH FINDINGS, TO PROMOTE NETWORKING AMONG THE SCIENTIFIC COMMUNITY, AND TO MENTOR BUDDING SCIENTISTS. RESULTS OF GRANTS AWARDED BY THE FOUNDATION ARE SHARED THROUGH THIS PROGRAM AS WELL. RESULTS OBTAINED THROUGHOUT THE FUNDING PERIOD FOR THE EXTRAMURAL PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR GRANT FURTHER DEFINED THE MOLECULAR INTERACTIONS BETWEEN THE GENE APOE4 AND THE ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE FACTOR AB. THESE EXPERIMENTS MAY PROVIDE MECHANISTIC INSIGHTS INTO THE ROLE OF APOE4 AS A RISK FACTOR FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE.

IN FY19, THE BOARD OF THE RUTH K. BROAD FOUNDATION APPROVED A NEW AWARD, THE ANN B. BUSSEL AWARD. THE FOUNDATION WILL BE AWARDING A TWO-YEAR GRANT, EFFECTIVE JULY 1, 2020 FOR $100,000 EACH YEAR. THE FIRST AWARD PERIOD BEGAN JULY 1, 2020. THE PURPOSE OF THIS AWARD IS TO IMPROVE OUR UNDERSTANDING OF, AND ABILITY TO TREAT, ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE AND PREFERENCE IS FOR RESEARCH APPROACHES THAT STUDY HUMANS TO COMPLEMENT THE RUTH K. BROAD FOUNDATION'S EXISTING, PRIMARY BASIC NEUROSCIENCE, RESEARCH GRANT PROGRAMS. THE GRANT WILL BE AWARDED TO FACULTY AT DUKE.
