STUDENT GOVERNMENTAL AFFAIRS PROGRAM, INC. (S-GAP) IS A NONPARTISAN EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM WHICH PRODUCES MATERIALS FOR USE IN PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SCHOOLS WITH THE SPECIFIC PURPOSE OF ENCOURAGING HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS TO BECOME INVOLVED IN THE LEGISLATIVE PROCESS THROUGH BOTH KNOWLEDGE AND PARTICIPATION.EACH STUDENT-PARTICIPANT RECEIVES A MONTHLY NEWSLETTER AND OTHER TEACHING MATERIALS DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR THAT IS TOPIC-ORIENTED TOWARDS CURRENT, PENDING ISSUES. THIS MATERIAL IS USED AS DISCUSSION POINTS FOR THE STUDENTS. THE PROGRAM MATERIAL IS DESIGNED TO ALLOW A STUDENT TO NOT ONLY BECOME AWARE OF CURRENT ISSUES, BUT INDIVIDUALLY VOTE ON THE PENDING LEGISLATION WHERE THE RESULTS ARE TABULATED BY CLASS. IT IS S-GAP'S ULTIMATE OBJECTIVE TO INTRODUCE STUDENTS TO THE PROCESS SO THAT THEY WILL BECOME INVOLVED CITIZENS IN THE FUTURE. THE PROGRAM MATERIALS HAVE BEEN DISTRIBUTED TO OVER 214,053 STUDENTS IN MORE THAN 1,034 SCHOOLS NATIONWIDE.
