THE RICHARD DAVID KANN MELANOMA FOUNDATION (RDKMF) IS A NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION, WHOSE MISSION IS TO SAVE LIVES THROUGH EDUCATION ABOUT THE PREVENTION AND EARLY DETECTION OF SKIN CANCER, ESPECIALLY MELANOMA, ITS DEADLIEST FORM. THE NEWEST EDUCATION AND PREVENTION INITIATIVE IS THE DISTRIBUTION OF PORTABLE TOUCH-FREE SUNSCREEN DISPENSERS PLACED IN PARKS, BEACHES, SCHOOLS AND OUTDOOR AREAS WHERE SUN EXPOSURE IS EXCESSIVE. THE SUNSCREEN DISPENSER PROGRAM INVOLVES PROVIDING FREE SUNSCREEN BY DISPENSING A REGULATED 1 - MILLILITER DOSE OF SUNSCREEN PER APPLICATION SO USERS CAN QUICKLY APPLY THE PROPER AMOUNT. RDKMF MOST RECENTLY PARTNERED WITH THE MAYOR OF PHILADELPHIA AND THE PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES TO LAUNCH A PILOT PROGRAM FOR A SUN SMART AMERICA CITY TO SUPPORT THE DISTRIBUTION OF SUNSCREEN DISPENSERS IN CITIES, BALLPARKS AND STADIUMS. USING THE SUNSMART AMERICA K-12 CURRICULUM, WHICH HAS BEEN ADAPTED TO MEET FLORIDA STANDARDS (FORMERLY SUNSHINE STATE STANDARDS BY THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION), THE RDKMF HAS EDUCATED HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF STUDENTS, FAMILIES AND COMMUNITIES, AND EMPOWERED THEM TO MAKE CRITICAL SUN SAFE CHOICES FOR HEALTHY LIVES. THE EDUCATION, PROGRAMS AND RESOURCES ARE MULTI-DISCIPLINE AND CROSS-CURRICULAR, ALLOWING SCHOOLS TO MEET THE REQUIREMENTS NECESSARY FOR SCIENCE, HEALTH, PHYSICAL EDUCATION, AND LANGUAGE ARTS. THE WEBSITES ONLINE EDUCATION FOR TEACHERS, STAFF, NURSES, EDUCATORS AND STUDENTS, PROVIDES INTERACTIVE EDUCATION AND ACCREDITATION NATIONWIDE AND BEYOND, AS WELL AS: IMPORTANT MEDICAL AND SCIENTIFIC INFORMATION ABOUT SKIN CANCER TYPES OF SKIN CANCER, EARLY DETECTION TECHNIQUES, STATISTICS OF SKIN CANCER IN THE UNITED STATES, UV RADIATION AND UV INDEX. TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES SUNSMART AMERICA TEACHER/SCHOOL NURSE TRAINING FOR TEACHERS, SCHOOL NURSES AND DAYCARE WORKERS. SUNSMART AMERICA STUDENT TRAINING FOR MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS. SCHOOL PROGRAMS SUNSMART AMERICA SCHOOLS SUN SAFETY POLICY PROGRAM IS A PROGRAM TO ASSIST SCHOOLS IN DEVELOPING A SUN SAFETY POLICY.
