One of only a handful of conductorless chamber ensembles in the world, New Century Chamber Orchestra comprises 19 string players from the San Francisco Bay Area and across the United States. Musical decisions are made collaboratively, resulting in an enhanced level of commitment from the musicians and concerts of remarkable precision, passion, and power. British violinist Daniel Hope has served as Music Director since 2018, ushering in a new era of artistic vibrancy and creative leadership. Previous Music Directors include Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg (20082017), Krista Bennion Feeney (19992006), and founding Music Director Stuart Canin (19921999). {Achievements continued at 4b}

Dedicated to virtuosic performances of chamber orchestra masterworks, New Century also champions the future of the genre through frequent commissions of new music and boundary-pushing collaborations across artistic disciplines. The ensemble maintains an intimate relationship with audiences by performing in local venues throughout the Bay Area and beyond, and by connecting musical history to the voices of living composers and the cultural conversations of today. Recent commissions include works by Tan Dun, Mark-Anthony Turnage, Nicolas Benavides, Mark Adamo, and Jake Heggie.{Achievements continued at 4c}

Under Daniel Hopes direction, New Century has expanded its touring and recording profile. Following its inaugural European tour in 2019, the orchestra returned to Europe in 2023, performing at prestigious venues and festivals across Germany and Poland, including the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, Rheingau Festival, and the Philharmonie Essen. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the orchestra reached a global audience of more than 400,000 through its participation in Daniel Hopes Hope@Home digital concert series. In 2023, New Century released its debut album on the prestigious Deutsche Grammophon label, featuring newly commissioned works and earning international acclaim.
