E-bikes for Everyone-Bikes are already a simple solution to many huge problems; e-bikes are a broadly accessible solution. But they can be expensive. CalBike works to educate the public on the role that e-bikes can play in replacing car trips while also providing other important benefits such as health, economy, and safety. CalBikes work supports that as a climate solution, e-bike subsidies are more valuable than e-car subsidies. CalBike has worked with the administering agency to monitor and advance the e-bike incentive program approved in 2021 throughout to move towards program launch estimated for fall 2023, gathering an email list of interested parties and keeping Californians updated on progress of the program and steps to participate once launched for consumers and vendors.Legislative Improvements- In the past year, CalBike has advocated for a number of legislative improvements to increase safe and fun bicycling and active mobility. Decriminalizing jaywalking reduces the number of traffic stops for people on foot (and walking bicycles), especially important for over-policed communities of color. Several bike-friendly updates to the California Vehicle Code included requiring car drivers to move over a full lane to pass someone on a bicycle. Changes to allowed local parking requirements, environmental review practices for transit and active transportation, and bike parking in building standards were other legislative improvements CalBike worked on to improve safety and convenience of bicycling.Complete Streets-Following the veto of Complete Streets legislation and request from the Governor for Caltrans to work internally to improve Complete Streets policy and practice, CalBike has worked with Caltrans administration on this pursuit. CalBike has provided critical input and connections to local and regional bicycling and pedestrian advocates to help Caltrans incorporate best practices in designing Complete Streets on the state-owned roadway network.
