Professional Wildlife Monitoring: We continue to research and implement non-invasive monitoring to improve the welfare of endangered species. In 2024, we expanded the critical datasets we are delivering to the US and foreign governments and other institutions on endangered species population numbers and distribution. In 2024, WildTrack developed a proof of concept for a novel biodiversity metric to analyze the tracks of small mammals (40% of ecosystem species) using AI, morphometrics, and Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK). Samples were taken in 5 sites across South Africa, Botswana and Namibia, and WildTrack demonstrated that small mammal species can be classified by footprints. WildTrack delivered species richness profiles to each habitat, indicating habitat health and other metrics in a cost-effective and non-invasive manner. In Botswana, WildTrack collaborated with the US Army and the Botswana Defence Force (BDF) to curb the illegal wildlife trade which is often used to fund regional conflict. WildTrack implemented machine-learning models to automate the identification of ungulate species and lay the foundation for UAV-based monitoring of trail characteristics. WildTrack supervised 2 PhD students and submitted peer-reviewed papers. In 2024, WildTrack continued to enhance its machine-learning platform to automated track classification. We achieved 90%+ accuracy in discriminating 33 endangered species, completed the development of 60 species algorithms using morphometrics and expanded the WildTrack AI database to 22,000+ images and a user base of 1,600 for its applications.
