Productions - City Lights Theater Company of San Jose, Inc. produces a mainstage season of 6 plays per year in the Company's intimate 109-seat venue, and is committed to presenting exhilarating, thought-provoking plays that speak eloquently to our audiences. The company actively develops and produces new plays through the new play festival "Lights Up!", some of which became a part of a regular season. City Light's six-play season is the main focus of the Company's programming efforts. The season runs September - August, with each production running 4-6 weeks. Performances occur Thursday - Sunday. The 2022-2023 mainstage season included live productions of Every Brilliant Thing, The Thanksgiving Play, Miss You Like Hell, Blithe Spirit, The River Bride, and Kinky Boots. Some individual performances were cancelled as follows: Two performances of The Thanksgiving Play (Nov-Dec 2022) were cancelled to allow the installation of a needed seismic support post for a roof truss that developed a crack in the South Bay earthquake experienced in October 2022; the first week of performances for Miss You Like Hell (Jan-Feb 2023) were cancelled due to a last-minute casting change; three performances of Kinky Boots (July-Aug 2023) were cancelled due to a Covid-19 outbreak in the cast. City Lights' Lights Up! New Play Festival gives local playwrights an opportunity to develop their plays with readings performed over one weekend, each followed by an audience talkback discussion. Promising scripts are chosen by a volunteer committee and then assigned to a director who casts the reading and conducts 3 or so rehearsals. In 2019-20 the program was moved to an audio-only format and distributed on the Organization's podcast channel, Filament. The 22-23 Lights Up! festival was not released until Sept 5, 2023, thereby making it a part of the 23-24 season. The Next Stage is a live online series presenting virtual behind-the-scenes discussions with the actors, directors, and designers participating in the mainstage productions. All installments are offered free of charge. The Filament Podcast channel was started as stated above to host the 2020 Lights Up! new play festival. It is offered free of charge. City Lights released, 1 episodes of Spooky Lights (readings of Halloween themed short stories), and one interview with Katie Coleman, the musical director for the North American tour of SIX.

Youth & Education Program - Engages students and their teachers actively in the dramatic arts. At the core of the program is the Company's commitment to offering significantly discounted tickets to students and educators. The company provides study guides for each play to enhance the learning experience for students that attend the productions.
