Bring Me A Book brings the joy and power of books to children in under-resourced communitiesespecially the books they choose themselves. We believe that literacy as a civil right begins with defining oneself as a reader and choosing the books that help one strengthen identitysociocultural background, languages, values, perspectives, and developing knowledge of the world. When children possess the skills necessary to effectively evaluate and choose their own books, their ability to become engaged members of their communities and productive citizens is enhancedbenefiting humanity as a whole. Bring Me a Book strives for book abundance for children wherever they may bein under-resourced preschools and schools, pediatric clinics, Girls & Boys Clubs, foster care, Kids in Custody, and in subsidized and transitional housing for the houseless particularly in Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties. Book Cubbies and Family Engagement WorkshopsBook cubbies are distributed through the Family Engagement and Book Cubby Workshops. We reach children and their families through under-resourced preschools, schoolsand through children living in foster homes and subsidized and transitional housing. In this way, through out local workshops, we have distributed approximately 300 cubbies and 1,000 books.Home LibrariesBooks in the homewherever home may beare essential. Raising a child in a home filled with books positively impacts the childs future personal and academic success. Regardless of how many books the family already has, each addition to the home library helps children do better. A book-filled home encourages reading for enjoyment and talking about books We reach children and their families through under-resourced preschools, schools, and children living in foster homes, subsidized and transitional housing. Working with schools in more than 20 states, we were able to distribute about 10,000 books for childrens home libraries.Classroom LibrariesAccess to books and academic success go hand-in-hand. When children live in classrooms with libraries, they read 50 60% more than children who dont. Books in the classroom, just like books in the homecreate a culture of reading which promotes time to read and talk about books. And thats hugely significant because independent reading in school is the best predictor of academic success. Working with our partner Bookelicious, we promoted classroom libraries locally and beyondin addition to bolstering teachers understanding of quality childrens literature.Service Club Speaker Book ProgramThe Bring Me a Book Speaker Appreciation program was developed for service clubs as a means of recognizing guest speakers at their regular meetings. Clubs adopt a local under-resourced classroom, from preschool through third grade, to receive the books that the club orders through the Bring Me A Book Speaker Appreciation Collection available online at Bookelicious: www.Bookelicious.com . Club members deliver the books to an organization or agency that serves children in under resourced communities such as school and public libraries, medical clinics, Boys and Girls Clubs, and the like.
