WEEKLY COMMUNITY OUTREACHES INCLUDE HEALTH SCREENINGS AND EDUCATION TO HELP PEOPLE LEARN EARLY IF THEY HAVE HIGH BLOOD SUGAR OR BLOOD PRESSURE ARE PROVIDED BY WFC ACROSS VENTURA COUNTY. THOSE WHO DO HAVE ABNORMAL RESULTS ARE INVITED TO CLINIC AND THE HEALTHY HEARTS PROGRAM. THE HEALTHY HEARTS PROGRAM IS DESIGNED FOR PEOPLE AT HIGH RISK FOR HEART DISEASE AND DIABETES, PROVIDES PATIENTS WITH THE TOOLS THEY NEED TO TAKE CHARGE OF THEIR HEALTH, BECOME HEALTH LITERATE, EDUCATE OTHERS, AND RECEIVE THE EXTRA SUPPORT THEY NEED TO ACHIEVE POSITIVE HEALTH OUTCOMES. WFC ALSO DISTRIBUTES FREE HEALTHY FOOD (WITH NO ADDED FAT, SALT, OR SUGAR) TO SUPPORT HEALTH AND WELLNESS FOR OVER 500 FAMILIES WEEKLY. OTHER IMMEDIATE NEEDS OF THE COMMUNITY THAT ARE HEALTH-RELATED ARE MET AS NEEDED. TWO-THIRDS OF GOODS AT WFC ARE DONATED.

MORE THAN HALF OF THE STUDENTS IN THIS PROGRAM ARE FROM LOW-INCOME, UNDERSERVED FAMILIES, AND MOST ARE THE CHILDREN OF CLINIC PATIENTS. THE PROGRAM EXPOSES TEENS TO CAREERS IN MEDICINE, NURSING, PHARMACOLOGY, DENTISTRY, OPTOMETRY, COMMUNITY HEALTH, ETC., AND PROVIDES THEM WITH TRAINING, ADULT MENTORSHIP, PEER SUPPORT, SERVICE LEARNING, AND COLLEGE AND CAREER COUNSELING. STUDENTS ASSIST VOLUNTEER PHYSICIANS IN THE DELIVERY OF CARE TO THE UNINSURED AND GAIN HANDS-ON EXPERIENCE IN BASIC CLINICAL SKILLS.
