The wildlife were injured, orphaned, or habituated to humans. Providing lifelong care includes safe habitats, food, and medical care. As of 2023, resident species included: American Black Bear, American Badger, Bobcats, Gray Wolf, Coyote, Red Fox, Bison, Racoon, Sandhill Crane, Turkey Vulture, Crow, Raven, Owl, Raptors and Corvid, and Salamander

The wildlife residents at YW have unique stories of survival creating an opportunity for public education. As indicated by our mission, sharing a message of education and conservation is a focus of the organization. During 2023, YWS conducted school programs,tours and encounters. The full program reached over 3676 students through programming and thousands of visitors participating in keeper talks. The program continued to grow in 2023 post-pandemic and was supported by two educators, one full-time and one part-time, to serve the demand for environmental and wildlife programs, and to service area schools.
