In October 2023, the FIRST Global Challenge was hosted in Singapore. An Olympic-style competition, the 2023 challenge engaged teams from 191 nations, with all teams able to travel to the event in Singapore. Each team is allowed a maximum of five student competitors to attend the event as members of the official traveling team, with an unlimited number of team members allowed to work on the challenge in their home country in preparation for the event. Approximately 1,836 high school students participated, under the guidance of 937 volunteer mentors. The 2023 theme of Hydrogen Horizons highlighted the potential of hydrogen as a sustainable energy source and the teams worked to produce, store, transport and convert hydrogen into different forms of usable energy. Teams learned about all types of renewable energy, including hydrogen technologies and the steps to create a clean energy future.
