Mission

FLAGS FOR FORT SNELLING WAS BORN WITH THE MISSION TO CONTINUE THE TRADITION OF HONORING OUR VETERANS ON MEMORIAL DAY BY PLACING FLAGS AT THEIR HEADSTONES. THE FORT SNELLING NATIONAL CEMETERY IS OPERATED BY THE VETERANS ADMINISTRATION WITH A LIMITED NUMBER OF CIVILIAN STAFF, AND THUS DO NOT HAVE THE FUNDING OR ASSISTANCE TO PROVIDE A FLAG FOR ALMOST 200,000 GRAVES. THIS IS WHERE WE STEP IN. WE WORK TO COLLECT DONATIONS FOR THE FUNDING OF THE AMERICAN FLAGS, AND THEN ORGANIZE VOLUNTEERS TO DISTRIBUTE THE FLAGS ON MEMORIAL DAY. AS AN ADDED EFFORT TO KEEP THE PUBLIC'S INTEREST IN OUR MISSION, WE OFFER THE OPPORTUNITY FOR THOSE TO REQUEST A SPECIAL RECOGNITION FOR THEIR LOVED ONE IF THEY CANNOT PERSONALLY MAKE IT TO THE CEMETERY. WE COLLECT THEIR LOVED ONE'S NAMES, AND PROVIDE A PHOTO OF THE FLAG WE PLACE IN THEIR HONOR.

FLAG PLACEMENT: PLACING FLAGS AT EVERY HEADSTONE AT FORT SNELLING NATIONAL CEMETERY. FOR 2018, THE MAIN FLAG PLACEMENT DAY WAS ON SATURDAY, MAY 26TH. OUR VOLUNTEERS CAME IN WAVES, ARRIVING INITIALLY AT THE MALL OF AMERICA FOR CHECK-IN, AND THEN WERE SHUTTLED TO THE CEMETERY. THERE THEY RECEIVED THEIR BUNCH OF 25 FLAGS TO PUT IN PLACE. ONCE FINISHED, THEY WERE SHUTTLED BACK TO THE MALL AND ENCOURAGED TO PARTICIPATE IN THEIR ACTIVITIES. FLAG PLACEMENT REQUESTS: WE OFFER A PROGRAM THROUGH OUR WEBSITE THAT ALLOWS PEOPLE WHO ARE UNABLE TO PERSONALLY VISIT THE CEMETERY TO SUBMIT A FORM WITH THEIR LOVED ONE'S INFORMATION AND GRAVESITE INFORMATION. WE THEN HAVE A PAIR OF FLAG RUNNER VOLUNTEERS GO OUT TO THE CEMETERY WITH THEIR LIST OF REQUESTS TO FULFILL AND TAKE PICTURES OF THE FLAGS AT THE HEADSTONES. THEY THEN UPLOAD IT TO OUR WEBSITE VIA A FORM WHICH AUTOMATICALLY POSTS IT TO A FEED ON OUR SITE AND ONTO OUR FACEBOOK PAGE. FLAG COLLECTION: WE HAD ABOUT 1,000 VOLUNTEERS FOR THE COLLECTION OF THE FLAGS, SOME OF WHICH WERE SORTING THE FLAGS INTO BUNDLES OF 25.
