Forest School is an idea that originated in Europe and a popular model for early childhood education that is catching on in the United States and around the world. Children thrive in this outdoor setting, in all weather types, constantly challenging their balance, fears, comfort levels, risk assessment, critical thinking skills, social-emotional skills and physical and mental abilities. Through play, kids are able to release stress from a busy world and schedule, engage their senses, make deep and lasting connections to the natural world, as well as gain great interpersonal skills with other kids of all ages. Red Oaks Forest School benefits the community by providing space for families to connect with nature and learn through exploration and education. Continued on Schedule O...

Red Oaks Forest School connected thousands of people to nature and each other in 2025. We offer 8 Forest School programs in some combination in 4 service locations across Central and Eastern Kentucky for a total of 14 programs serving 200 students. We also have programs like camping, climbing, hiking, art club, birding club, and nature-wellness days offered on weekends to help people connect to nature on a regular basis. Our programs range from helping students understand nature through a scientific lens, to learning about history, art, music, language and bush-craft too. We work with over 40 community partners across Central and Eastern Kentucky to share resources, maximize our impact, and ensure that anyone who desires to connect to nature can do so with Red Oaks. Our programs work with infants all the way to adults. We have been very successful and bringing volunteers and community partners together to build a deep sense of community through shared experiences in nature. We provided 1,950 hours of outdoor programming and were supported by 50 volunteers providing 1650 hours of service.
