Southside Harm Reduction Services (SHRS) is a Minnesota non-profit organization founded in 2017. SHRS is a grassroots, comprehensive health program primarily serving communities in South Minneapolis. The mission is to promote the health and wellbeing of community members facing substance use challenges. Prevention and needle exchange programming are evidenced-based health interventions.Peer-reviewed data shows that people who engage with these services are more likely to access health care, reduce incidence of infectious disease, get access to substance use disorder treatments, and ultimately reduce or cease their substance use. SHRS also supports people to connect with treatment, housing, food, and other resources people choose, centering individual autonomy. SHRS core programming includes: distributing health education and safety supplies via street outreach; offer on-demand mobile safety supply deliveries; low barrier drop in center; distribution of the opioid overdose antidote naloxone and overdose prevention education; HIV testing; and, linkage to services that provide non-discriminatory care.
