FSWs educational training program, the Richard P. Garmany Fresh Start Academy, includes classroom instruction and hands-on skill building in a professional wood shop. Additionally, the program focuses on soft skills, like arriving on time and being reliable as well as safety--participants earn safety (OSHA10) and CPR certifications. In 2025 the academy implemented the industry-standard Home Builders Institute PACT curriculum. After completing the training, participants are supported in their job search by FSWs staff and partners. FSW hires some training graduates directly into FSWs social enterprise program. FSWs social enterprise program provides a setting for longer-term transitional employment for 5-8 individuals at a time who need more time before they are ready to move on to other employers. While employed with FSW they create made-to-order products, learn additional carpentry skills, improve their speed of production, and can learn additional technical skills such as operating a CNC router. When they leave the FSW shop floor, they generally go to full time jobs at $25-27/hour with benefits.
