The region of Sierre Leone where MOH is working is primarily a cocoa and rice farming area. Over 2000 rice farmers have approahced MOH to create a fish farm to help integrate tilapia and catfish as a second cash crop into their rice fields. Integrating fish in the rice fileds provides nutrition to the rice, destroys pests, and increases the rice yield. The fish also eat the eggs of the mosquitos that cause malaria which are laid on the standing swamp water. MOH will be tracking the project and local malaria rates weekly and monthly in the pilot villages working on the finsh and rice project. Early in 2024 MOH acquired 3 abandoned professionally dug fish breeding ponds and has started the process of growing tilapia and catfish for release into the farmers fields. The initial project is four ponds in four rice fields. This will expand to 30 ponds as each member of the pilot project digs a pond in their field. If successful, the project will be

MOH has been working with seven villages to help build a Maternity Hospital for women and children. This facility will have operating capacity, and will run on solar power. Nearby staff housing has been built, and two wells have already been dug to provide clean water to the facility and staff. In 2024 MOH funding has provided for the foundation to be poured and construction started. Villagers have made 10,000 cement blocks by hand for the construction. The villagers have donated sand, stone and unskilled labor. MOH hopes to provide enough funding in 2024 and 2025 to complete the hospital. MOH has received the approval of the Sierra Leone Ministry of Health for this project. MOH has also built a lending library for hand tools and a fully electrified power tool workshop which created furniture for the clinic. This project will also build windows, doors and furniture for the hospital.
