Doxie By Proxy Rescue works closely with animal shelters throughout Central and Eastern North Carolina to rescue dachshunds and dachshund mixes facing homelessness neglect medical challenges or risk of euthanasia. During 2025 the organization successfully rescued rehabilitated and placed 182 dogs into carefully screened adoptive homes while also providing ongoing support and follow-up services to adoptive families.Supported by a dedicated volunteer team of approximately 25 individuals Doxie By Proxy Rescue manages every aspect of the rescue and adoption process including shelter intake coordination foster placement veterinary care medical transportation adoption application reviews reference checks interviews home visits and adopter education. These efforts help ensure successful long-term placements and positive outcomes for both the dogs and their adoptive families.The organization remains committed to every dog it rescues for the duration of that animals life. Adopters receive continued guidance regarding behavioral adjustment medical care and transition support following adoption. In the event that an adopter can no longer care for a dog Doxie By Proxy Rescue guarantees that the animal may be returned to the organization at any time ensuring lifelong protection and preventing future homelessness.Prior to adoption every dog receives comprehensive veterinary care including spay neuter surgery vaccinations dental treatment as needed bloodwork diagnostic testing and treatment for existing medical conditions. The organization also provides behavioral assessment rehabilitation and training for dogs surrendered due to behavioral concerns. Doxie By Proxy Rescue specializes in caring for dogs with significant medical needs and behavioral challenges that may make placement through traditional channels more difficult.The average veterinary and rehabilitation cost for each dog rescued by the organization is approximately 1,200 while the average adoption fee is approximately 300.
