AfriThrives flagship Healthy Food & Equity Initiative continues to advance food justice by increasing access to culturally appropriate, nutritious foods for immigrant and underserved families across Montgomery, Prince Georges, and Baltimore Counties. In 2024, the program distributed over 400 thousand pounds of fresh produce and culturally relevant foods, serving more than 15,000 residents annually through weekly distributions and community-based partnerships. The programs Food as Medicine component expanded through partnerships with health providers and local agencies, integrating nutrition education with chronic disease prevention. Over 120 families participated in hands-on cooking classes, culturally relevant nutrition workshops, and SNAP enrollment assistance. This holistic approach addresses food insecurity, supports preventive health, and empowers families to make informed food choices rooted in culture and community.

URBAN FARM & COMMUNITY GARDENING: AfriThrives Cultural Farm and Community Gardening Initiative grew significantly in 2024, advancing sustainable agriculture and food sovereignty through experiential education and production of African heritage crops. Its farm in Poolesville, MD produced thousands of pounds of vegetablesincluding spider flower, amaranth, and African kaleshared across our food access sites and local markets. The farm hosted over 250 community members, students, and emerging farmers for immersive training in regenerative agriculture, composting, and climate-smart farming practices. In partnerships with schools and organizations, AfriThrive expanded its Youth Changemakers in Agriculture and Garden-to-Classroom programs, teaching sustainable farming, entrepreneurship, and environmental stewardship across three counties.
