The goal of our work is to empower urban communities with the methods and tools to take advantage of the opportunities that rainwater provides by simply transforming a rooftop from a liability to an asset. In particular, we Installed 42 complete rainwater catchment systems in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo. A complete system includes a gutter system on the roof, a large ferrocement rainwater tank (usually 5,00 to 10,000 liters), an overflow well, and site grading and revegetation to promote infiltration. This means 42 homes in Kinshasa have completely managed on-site rainwater such that no runoff leaves the parcel and enters the street; the first step in the community-driven initiative to prevent flooding and erosion. In addition, this equates to nearly 300 people that have an at-home water supply for up to nine months of the year.
